Changed opening hours during the summer
From Monday 9 July to Friday 7 September, the Walaeus Library will be open from 8.30 - 17.00h. This means that the library is closed om the evenings. You can return borrowed books anytime by putting them in the return box in the cloakroom (which is accessible with your LUMC badge).

ORCID
It is important that all ecientific publications at national and institutional level are quantifiable so one can also visualize the percentage of open access articles.
For every publishing LUMC-author it is important to create an ORCID account
If you (already) have an ORCID account you can register it in the Peoplesoft personnel system. You can register your ORCID under → Personal Data → Personal IDs. In the near future, ORCID will be used in Converis to record the articles that can be put in the Leiden Repository.
See the Walaeus guide ORCID.

The latest version of EndNote, X8.2, is now available across LUMC through the Software Centre
In EndNote X8.2, a number of minor malfunctions have been resolved – for example, the inclusion of non-PDF files as relative links. The problem of PDFs being deleted from a library whilst not deleted from the library’s .Data folder was also resolved.
In addition, the function of 'Find Full Text' has been improved and ‘drag and drop’ can be used to add .zip, .epub, .mp4 and .mp3 files to references.
- Stand-alone versions for home installation (both Windows and MAC) can be found using lumc.nl/thuisgebruik.
- LUMC students can install EndNote X8.2 (Windows and MAC) using the Blackboard module Studentenhelpdesk/Servicedesk > Information

Data search
Data search is a free search engine from Elsevier that can be used to find research data. This site is now available in a test version and is aimed at increasing the impact, validity, reproducibility, efficiency and transparency of scientific research by simplifying the sharing and use of research data. See also the FAQ .

Data-filters in PubMed en PubMed Central
Recently the possibility of finding journal articles linked to specific data sets has been developed. These data filters can be used for both PubMed Central (PMC) and PubMed. For PubMed Central, the following three filters are available for specific data:
  1. has suppdata[filter], to find articles with supplementary material.
  2. has data avail[filter], to find articles containing statements about the availability and accessibility of data.
  3. has data citations[filter], to find articles containing citations to data sets.

It is also possible to combine all three filters: with has associated data[filter], all three article types can be found in PMC.

In PubMed, you can search with the data[filter] to find references with related data links in the Secondary Source ID field or the LinkOut – Other Literature Resources field (both can be found under the abstract). Example: data[filter] AND "Leiden University Medical Centre"[ad]: see the links to extra data for these references, to systems such as ClinicalTrials.gov.

Scientific research should be 'Open'
Three different reports and recommendations with this message were recently published. Not only should research publications be available ‘free of charge’, the underlying data should also be accessible according to the FAIR principles.
These recommendations can be found in the following publications:

Paths to Reference - library use by students
Recent international research conducted by Oxford University Press shows that 75% of the students who were surveyed rely on sources acquired by the library, in addition to freely available sources. This research has been published as a “White paper": 'Paths to Reference: How today’s students find and use reference resources'.
University students use library sources for various purposes, such as research, preparation for lessons, exam preparation, and reading in general. For factual, very concise information, people often use free internet resources, but for more detailed, in-depth information and background information students mainly use library resources.
