The number of places to study has been greatly expanded. In our right wing, where previously the bound volumes of periodicals were housed, there are now 12 study tables with 72 places.

Latest version of EndNote X9 available for installation
The latest version of EndNote, X9, is available for installation from the Software Centre. Upon installation, the old version of EndNote will be replaced and the associated "libraries" will be converted. New options in EndNote X9 include:
  • Preparing bibliographies with the latest reference types, like blogs, multimedia and social media
  • Ensuring bibliographic accuracy with new and updated Output Styles
  • Manuscript Matcher to see a list of suitable journals for publishing your article
  • Managing team input by giving “write" or "read only" permissions to a shared library

Open Access
European financiers of research, including NWO, want to force a breakthrough in the area of Open Access by requiring researchers to publish in journals that are fully Open Access. Publishing in so-called “hybrid journals” will not be permitted anymore after the transition period of 2 years. See Plan S, the article from the Volkskrant of 4 September 2018 and the response from LERU.

PubMed-news
  • PubMed has recently started offering the option of ranking references according to a new sequence: Sort by Best Match. Although this only suggests a different sequence, it can result in a different outcome compared to the other sorting options available such as Sort by Most Recent. The Best Match Search Information displayed on the screen also does not offer a precisely described search strategy. For presentation of the exact Query Translation: click Advanced > History > click on the #set number > Show Search Details. See also this report in the NLM Technical Bulletin and the article in PLOS Biol (2018) about the makers of the algorithm.
  • Other new options in PubMed concern two new fields: Conflict of Interest Statements and Editorial Expressions of Concern. They are displayed in the Abstract Format and can be searched. A number of Subject Filter Strategies (preprogrammed search filters) have also been updated.

Retractions
Retractions, scientific articles that are withdrawn by the author or publisher, continue to be cited as if they had not been retracted, primarily by researchers who do not realise that something might be wrong with the findings. In Scientometrics a study was published examining what happened with 1,000 retracted articles. They looked at how long it took before the articles were retracted, and when and how often they continued to be cited. Because Elsevier, in contrast to other publishers, usually makes the retracted articles freely available, the researchers advise that Elsevier end free access to these articles from now on. For this study a database containing 17,000 retractions was used, and in future this file could play a role in determining whether or not a published study has been withdrawn. More information.
